Trinity 'murder mystery musical' on tour
When a vicious murderer strikes several times in Tiger Bay in 1910, the local community is up in arms.
As the frantic hunt for the murderer intensifies, so also does the pressure by local residents on the authorities to find the culprit at once – whatever the cost.
Following the much acclaimed production of the musical Clymau which was on tour in 2009, the School of Theatr, Cerdd a’r Cyfryngau at Trinity University College are proud to present the latest artistic collaboration between Ceri Elen and Eilir Owen Griffiths (who is also one of the School’s music tutors).
Whilst Clymau was based on the play Siwan by Saunders Lewis, Heb ei Fai... is based on an original story, even though the themes of love, responsibility and the pressure of social expectations permeate both works.
“The show’s themes are bang up to date”, claims director Iestyn Llwyd (Head of the School of Theatr, Cerdd a’r Cyfryngau), “the way the power of the Press and the Media can stir up social hysteria through their use of provocative sensational headlines is frightening. What is even more frightening is the way the authorities can yield to such social pressure to find and accuse someone – or rather, any one!”
Euros Rhys Evans – director of the School’s musical study pathways – is the production’s Musical Director.
According to Euros; “It is a privilege for any composer to be able to shape his music, knowing exactly who is going to perform his work for the first time. Similarly, this is a brilliant opportunity for students to stage an exciting new work, which has been especially composed for them.”
The performances will give an opportunity to second and third year students on the performance, music and media programmes of study in the School to collaborate and show their talents.
The students are also responsible for a great deal of the peripheral organisation and touring arrangements linked to the show. Some of the School’s media students are busily producing a documentary charting the progress of the production, and giving weekly instalments on the production’s Facebook page.
Arranging and coordinating a theatre tour on this scale offers particular challenges and a unique experience to students, and is part of the School’s intention to offer realistic experiences to the students whilst preparing them for similar challenges in the professional realm after they have completed their time at Trinity.
In the words of Nanw Llwyd Williams, a third year student originally from Cardiff,“I always enjoy working on musicals, but this show is so exciting and different from the others. There aren’t many ’Murder Mystery’ musicals around. I’m looking forward to going on tour more than anything.”
The show will be touring at the following locations:
22/23 March Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli at 7:30pm £7.50 / £6 conc. (01758 70 40 88)
24/25 March Theatr Colwyn, Colwyn Bay 7:30pm £8 / £6 (01492 53 26 68)
