Ruth Jones launches competition

Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones has officially launched the first ever Welsh libraries competition.
Ruth, in her role as Welsh Libraries Champion, joined Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones at Cardiff’s new flagship library to launch ‘Express Yourself’ - the Welsh libraries arts competition.
People are invited to write a poem, create a work of art or perform a play that would inspire people to visit their local library, with prizes of up to £500 on offer.
Ruth said: “Whatever you are into – writing, dancing, photography, painting, animation, drama or music – be inspired by your library and enter this exciting competition.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing the entries and presenting the awards next February – I’m sure the people of Wales with all their creative talents will take this opportunity to showcase them.”
The theme is simply ‘libraries’ however entrants can focus on one specific topic, for example books, computers, the staff, or on how the library has inspired or helped to achieve personal goals.
The competition is open to everyone including schools, individuals, voluntary or community organisations, and students. Entrants do not need to be a member of a library.
Categories are:
• Visual Art: Drawing, painting, original printing, craft work, sculpture, photography or mixed media.
• Short Film/Audio: Short films of music, drama, dance and animation will be accepted as will audio recordings of music.
• Creative Writing: Short stories or poems
Carmarthenshire’s Libraries and Heritage Manager Dewi Thomas said: “If you haven’t visited a library recently; this is a great opportunity to rediscover your local library and showcase your creative talents at the same time.
“I’m hoping this competition will really inspire the local community to produce a variety of works that we will be proud to exhibit and use in future projects.”
Along with prizes from £50-£500, finalists will be invited to an awards event and meet actress and writer Ruth and have their work displayed nationally.
Competition details are available from all Carmarthenshire libraries or visit library.wales.org/artscomp/, the closing date for entries is December 1.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
