Learn a new language call to Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire people are being encouraged to say Bonjour, Hola or Guten Tag to learning a European language.
Staff at the Carmarthen-based West Wales European Centre are encouraging people to learn a new lingo as they prepare to celebrate the European Day of Languages (EDL) on Saturday, September 26.
Countries all over Europe observe the occasion each year, celebrating the 200 languages spoken in the continent alone.
EDL was first celebrated in 2001 and now with 45 countries involved, it's getting bigger every year.
Lorena Prist, European Networking Officer at the West Wales European Centre, said: “Each year we look forward to celebrating the European Day of Languages.
“A language reflects our life and culture - it influences how we see the world, and how we interact with each other.
“Learning a European language is highly rewarding, and will inspire you to visit European countries and understand more about different cultures.
“So whether you choose French, Spanish, German or Italian, you will get so much enjoyment out of your new skill, whilst making new friends and exploring the world.”
The West Wales European Centre is part of Carmarthenshire County Council’s regeneration department and is also a member of the EU-wide network of information centres- Europe Direct, which aim to raise awareness of the European Union and its institutions.
Promoting the European Day of Languages and encouraging people to learn a new language is part of the centre’s commitment to strengthening links between Wales and the EU.
Top tips for learning a new language:
Remember that learning a new language also means learning to understand other ways of thinking and doing things.
If you already have experience in language learning, think about the kind of learning activities that suit you best. This will help you choose a course or textbook that fits your needs.
Don’t try to learn everything at once. Set clear and realistic targets and go at your own pace.
Use every opportunity to communicate in the language.
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. You can work gradually on reducing them. What matters is getting your meaning across.
Revise what you have learnt and review your progress regularly.
