Success for Hywel Dda health board at the Clinical Teacher of the Year Awards

Two high-flying consultant psychiatrists from Hywel Dda University Health Board are celebrating after winning prestigious awards from the British Medical Association (BMA).
Dr Justin Cressey-Rogers and Dr Matthew Sargeant came first in their respective categories in Teaching and Learning Innovation and Outstanding Achievement at the BMA Cymru Wales/ BMJ Clinical Teacher of the Year Awards for 2017.
Dr Cressey-Rogers has been involved in teaching medical students from Cardiff and Swansea universities, and teaching junior doctors in west Wales and Swansea.
Dr Cressey-Rogers is currently a consultant in psychiatry of substance misuse at CDAT Penlan, Carmarthen, and also works in community adult psychiatry, as well as working closely with substance misuse workers in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
He said: "“I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award – it’s been a team effort and special mention must go to the postgraduate centre and to Dr Sargeant, without whom I could not have won it.”
Cambridge-educated Dr Matthew Sargeant, meanwhile, was named as winner of the Outstanding Achievement award having held a number of consultant posts in Wales over the last 20 years.
Dr Sargeant is currently a consultant psychiatrist in the community in Haverfordwest, working with adult patients in diverse settings. He has held a number of roles in management and for the training of psychiatrists, and is currently the honorary senior lecturer for mental health teaching in Hywel Dda for Cardiff University (since 2011) and for Swansea University (since 2015).
Dr Philip Kloer, Medical Director at Hywel Dda UHB said: “It is one thing to be an excellent doctor but to be an excellent teacher for new generations of doctors and clinicians takes experience, patience and knowledge.
“On behalf of Hywel Dda UHB and their students and colleagues, I’d like to congratulate Dr Cressey-Rogers on his award for Teaching and Learning Innovation and Dr Sargeant on his Outstanding Achievement award.”
Dr Philip Banfield, BMA Welsh Council Chair, said: “The Clinical Teacher of the Year Awards 2017 celebrated the pivotal role clinical teachers play in the medical workforce; driving innovation, educating our future doctors, and providing clinical leadership and expertise to ensure high-quality care to patients across the health service.
“Dynamic clinical teachers are key to the delivery of high quality training for our doctors throughout their professional careers. The quality of clinical teaching in Wales is a clear reason for doctors to make Wales their preferred choice to complete their postgraduate training.”
