Three finalists announced in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category in health awards
Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced the three finalists in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category at this year’s Best of Health awards.
The Best of Health awards are an annual event organised by the University Health Board to recognise and reward the extraordinary achievements of its staff and volunteers, many of whom often go beyond the call of duty in their work for the benefit of patients and service users. This year, 110 entries were received from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.
The winners will be announced at an official ceremony in January 2016 when the Chief Executive will also announce the winner for overall best entry.
Lisa Gostling, Director of Workforce & Organisational Development said: “We are delighted with the number of entries received this year. Once again, people have found time to send in their nominations so that just some of the many achievements and inspiring work that is taking place across Hywel Dda University Health Board can be recognised and rewarded.
“Congratulations to all those who were nominated and I especially wish all the finalists the very best of luck.”
The ‘Unsung Hero’ category, sponsored by Mace, seeks to reward those who have performed over and above their normal role for the good of others and the finalists for 2015 are:
The Corporate Governance Team in recognition of their effort and dedication to improve the governance system in the organisation, working tirelessly to develop and implement a more robust framework. The team did this alongside their usual day-to-day work in managing the organisation’s board and committee arrangements, as well as responding to Freedom of Information requests, policy management, and dealing with external/internal regulators and legislation requirements.
Phil Roscoe for his significant contribution to the IT capability of the organisation. Since beginning work for the then Carmarthenshire NHS Trust in 2003, Phil has contributed to the development and maintenance of 50 computer interfaces, helping to improve the way our staff can work for the benefit of our patients. He has also represented the UHB within NHS Wales to support the implementation of the Myrddin clinical information system. Nominated by the UHB’s Head of IT, Paul Solloway said: “Phil has always been happy to work out of hours to assist our on-call staff as required, even late at night or early in the morning, which highlights his dedication and appreciation of how important these systems are to the organisation.”
Steven Griffiths nominated for his passion in advocating carers. Steven became a carer ambassador just over 2 years ago after caring for his parents; his personal experience of caring has enabled him to represent carers in many forums and raise the profile of the important role they play in society as a whole. He is passionate about making services and information for carers more accessible and easier to understand. He provides a much needed voice for the great many carers living in Carmarthenshire and always has time and empathy for others.
Miles Brown, Associate Director at Mace said: “As project management partners with the NHS in Wales, and collaborating with Hywel Dda University Health Board on a number of schemes, Mace regularly comes into contact with people who have made a fundamental, yet often unrecognised contribution to the end goal. These people go the extra mile, which is not in their usual job description or remit but they do it out of passion and commitment to the cause.
