The globe-trotting choristers of Côr Meibion Llanelli will be off on their travels again at the weekend.
The choir, celebrating its 50th anniversary, has visited North American, New Zealand and Australia and most parts of Europe over the years.
This time, the destination is the musical city of Salzburg in Austria.
The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the destination for a musical journey with a Christmas theme.
Choir chairman Mel Harries said: “Côr Meibion Llanelli is known worldwide for being a choir full of singers who are excellent ambassadors for song.
“This trip to Salzburg has been a year in the planning and we are all looking forward to it immensely.
“Our visit will include a performance at the renowned Salzburg Cathedral.
“The choir members will also be visiting Oberndorf, the place where Stille Nacht, Silent Night, was written.
“We will, of course, be performing Silent Night at its place of birth.
“In addition, the choristers will be performing at the historic Christmas Market in Salzburg.
“All in all, it promises to be a memorable trip in this our 50th year.
“It is yet another great example of why it pays to be a member of a choir with a great tradition of male voice singing like Côr Meibion Llanelli. You get the chance to perform in world famous locations and make friends the world over.
“There is a warm welcome for new members to attend our weekly rehearsal sessions at Furnace Community Hall at 7pm on Mondays and Thursdays.”
A host of singing stars and artists will unite at Llanelli's Ffwrnes Theatre on Saturday, November 22, to celebrate the début album of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World finalist, baritone Gary Griffiths.
The night titled “Début”, will be introduced by BBC Radio Wales’ popular Beverley Humphreys, Welsh opera star Gary Griffiths will be joined by English National Opera soprano Kate Valentine, pianist Caradog Williams, the acclaimed Hywel Girls’Choir & Hywel Boy Singers (Director of Music John Hywel Williams MBE, pianist Jean Hywel) and the mighty Pontarddulais Male Choir (Musical Director Clive Phillips, pianist David Last).
Audiences can look forward to a beautiful journey of song spanning opera, classics, sacred, musical theatre and the world of cinema.
Highlights will include Bizet’s Toreador, Mozart magic from the Marriage of Figaro, Easter Hymn, O Mia Babbino Caro, Hallelujah Chorus, O Holy Night, Panis Angelicus, Pie Jesu, a special arrangement of Myfanwy, Les Miserables, This was Nearly Mine from South Pacific... to name but a few. The performance will launch the debut album by Gary Griffiths to be released by SAIN.
Gary Griffiths’ launch album titled “Début” will launch at the end of November and will feature exciting contributions by the Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers and the Pontarddulais Male Choir.
Further to their recent Remembrance performance at the Brangwyn Hall Swansea, the Llanelli Choral Society will next be heard at the Christmas Fantasia on 6 December at Y Ffwrnes.
The Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers’ spectacular run up to Christmas continues. Further to their exciting royal performance at the Wales Festival of Remembrance, the choir will appear at Y Ffwrnes on 22 November and then at the Royal Albert Hall London on the 27 November as part of a celebrity line up for the Salvation Army's Celebrity International Christmas Gala.
The Hywel Choir’s big Christmas show, The Christmas Fantasia will take place at Y Ffwrnes on 6 December which will see 250 musicians and singers unite from the British Sinfonietta Orchestra, Hywel Choir, Llanelli Choral Society, Morriston RFC Male Choir, Adele O’Neill, Huw Tregelles Williams – all under the baton of John Hywel Williams.
Millions will be able to enjoy the John Hywel Williams and his Hywel Choir over the Christmas season with an appearance on BBC Breakfast News on Christmas Eve and an appearance on Christmas Day on Channel 4.
