Aberystwyth University’s School of Art hosts Chinese printmaking exhibition

Aberystwyth University’s School of Art will welcome four artists from Changsha, Hunan Province, China, who are here visiting the Contemporary Chinese Printmaking Exhibition due to open at The School of Art on Friday 10 October.
They include Professor Xiangke Luo, Head of Fine Art, Changsha Normal University and Professor Lu Yu from Changsha Central South University, Director and Vice-Director respectively of The Hunan Printmaking Association. The Director of Creative Art at Changsha Normal University, Liu Jing and Huang Yuanqiang, Chairman of Chenzhou Art Association, will also be making the journey over to Aberystwyth.
Curated by Paul Croft, Lecturer in Printmaking at The School of Art, this exchange exhibition will comprise of over seventy prints by 28 printmakers including members of The Hunan Printmaking Association as well as further prints by students from Changsha Central South University, Changsha Normal University (CNU) and The Art School at Hunan University of Science and Technology.
Paul explains, “The exhibition includes a wide range of images, subject matter and techniques and aims to provide a fascinating snapshot of contemporary printmaking from this interesting part of China.
“In May, I travelled to Changsha for the opening of the first show, ‘Jie’ (Borders), a joint exhibition between Aberystwyth University and Changsha Central South University at Changsha Houhu International Art Park.
“The exhibition included 33 lithographs by me and a similar number of woodcuts and screenprints by Professor Lu Yu. One of the reviewers included Artron, a leading website dedicated to contemporary art in China.”
During the visit, Paul met with printmakers from the Hunan Printmaking Association and was able to select work for the Aberystwyth show. Whilst he was there, he also gave lectures at each of the three universities represented and taught a four-day lithography workshop to 30 students at CNU.
Paul added, “It is hoped that further collaborations and exchanges of staff and students will occur over the next few years which will lead to further exhibitions and similar partnering projects.”
The exhibition ‘Contemporary Chinese Printmaking’ runs from Friday 10 October until Sunday 16 November at the Aberystwyth School of Art, Buarth Mawr, Aberystwyth. Further information is available here:
