Amcanu help provide the ‘cutting edge’ to new children’s hair salon

A Burry Port design and manufacturing business has helped provide the ‘cutting edge’ to a new specialist children’s hair salon which is reckoned to be the biggest in Wales.
The Tickled salon is opening in High Street, Swansea, this week (May 1), with owner and stylist Damian Hart grateful for the help of his engineering expert friend Owain Davies.
Mr Davies is the managing director of Amcanu, a firm which normally provides tailored sheet metal solutions for industrial purposes.
He explained: “Damian was looking for something novel for his new salon and hit upon the idea of using toy quad bikes and cars as ‘barbershop chairs’.
“We enjoy a challenge here at Amcanu and we were able to adapt battery and pedal-powered toy vehicles to suit Damian’s needs.
“With close attention to detail and safety, we were to provide him with some eye-catching ‘barbershop chairs’ for his new venture.
“Our normal work sees us building giant acoustic enclosures for noisy industrial machinery. Doing work for a hairdressing salon is something of a first for us, but it was great to be able to help Damian out and the team at Amcanu thoroughly enjoyed the project.”
Mr Hart has run the Menz Trendz salon in The Arcade in Llanelli town centre for 11 years. But he has chosen the new Urban Village in High Street in Swansea to expand his business and offer a service exclusively for children.
The £25 million Urban Village development is a Coastal Housing project designed to regenerate the High Street end of Swansea. The building was previously used for the South Wales Evening Post theatre showcase for Cappuccino Girls.
Mr Hart, 38, expects his specialist children’s salon to be the biggest in Wales, with four stylists, a receptionist and nursery nurses making up a staff of seven.
Painted murals on the walls and ‘Children’s Choice’ TV screens make for a colourful atmosphere at Tickled.
Mr Hart added: “We hope the new chairs and the salon will be a great hit with families who will come to us from all over South Wales.”

Notes to editors:
Amcanu is a design and manufacturing business. We provide tailored sheet metal solutions, with the emphasis on quality, attention to detail and precision. Based in West Wales, we produce sound insulating enclosures and tailored sheet metal solutions which are used around the world.
Amcanu is the company name and it reflects our Welsh roots and our passion for our work. Amcanu is a Welsh word (you can pronounce it Ahm-KAHN-ee). The word means – ‘to design . . . to have a purpose’. Amcanu reflects our Welsh identity and our manufacturing values.
We specialise in acoustic insulated enclosures for use in an industrial environment. For example, we can provide cases for water pumps and generators or other types of noisy equipment that need insulating.
Amcanu’s association with Burry Port goes back more than 30 years. The business became a part of the economic fabric of the community in 1975 when it started as Spencer Davies Engineering. Spencer Davies OBE is group chairman of Amcanu and the father of Amcanu managing director Owain Davies. Over the years, the business has evolved to its current operation as Amcanu, a company engaged in clever and innovative engineering production.
The ‘family’ work ethic still forms an important part of 40-year-old Owain’s stewardship of the company, with the business having many experienced long-term employees working alongside highly-skilled technology wizards who know how to get the best out of today’s cutting edge computer equipment.
We hold Investors in people status. We also hold the ISO 9000 benchmark. We have received a Certificate of Merit from Sony.
Tailored sheet metal solutions are the name of the game here at Amcanu. Good ‘tailors’ are always at a premium and we like to think of ourselves as the Savile Row of sheet metal solutions.
