It’s the Triple Crown of comedy!



In need of cheer after the doom and gloom of the rugby? Then, look no further than the Triple Crown of comedy in Wales.
Three of the most celebrated comedians in Wales will be taking to the ‘field of play’ in Ystradgynlais later this month.
The occasion sees the reprise of the famous ‘The Dragon Has Three Tongues’ show, featuring Phil Evans (above), Daniel Glyn and Gary Slaymaker.
“There be plenty of tongue-in-cheek points scoring a few conversions to the best in Welsh comedy,” promises Ammanford-based Phil Evans.
The acclaimed show has played in all four corners of Wales and was taken on its first ‘foreign tour’ last year when it formed the cornerstone of St David’s Day celebrations in Toronto in Canada.
Evans said: “Welsh audiences will be familiar with what the show is all about, but we haven’t given it an airing in Wales for a few months now, so it will be great fun to take it to heartland territory in Ystradgynlais.”
‘The Dragon Has Three Tongues’ will be staged at The Welfare in Brecon Road, Ystradgynlais, on Friday, February 22.
Wynne Roberts, of The Welfare (an independent charity theatre) said he was looking forward to the three comedians visiting Ystradgynlais.
“We’re not that well known as a comedy venue, but we did have Elis James (the up-and-coming Carmarthen comedian) here recently and he was well received, so we are hoping for a big Ystradgynlais welcome for Messrs Evans, Glyn and Slaymaker,” said Roberts.
The trio are familiar faces and voices in Wales and appear regularly on S4C (Welsh language TV) as well as BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.
Two years ago they joined forces to create ‘The Dragon Has Three Tongues’ to provide an innovative showcase for their different talents.
“It’s funny and entertaining, with the accent firmly on matters Welsh,” said Evans, the man who puts the ‘cwtsh’ into comedy in Wales.
“It’s the comic equivalent of ‘buy-one-get-one-free, except, of course that you get three comedians for the price of one,” laughed Evans. 


Daniel Glyn has been working in comedy since 1991. He jokes that one day he'll get it right!
As well as performing stand-up in Welsh and English, he has also written gags for Stuart Cable, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Jonathan Davies, Bryn Terfel, Lesley Phillips, Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris and Rhys Ifans. 


Gary Slaymaker is a native of Cwmann, near Lampeter, but now lives in Cardiff.
After a varied career working in a video shop, comics shop, a bar and as a labourer, his big break came in the late 1980s when he presented a late-night show on BBC Radio Cymru.
He later moved over to television, presenting his film-review show ‘Slaymaker’.
In 2005 he published his first Welsh language novel 'Y Sach Winwns' (The Onion Bag).

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
