Gwenno lands a starring role in Cats

One of the star pupils at Carmarthen’s leading theatre arts group has landed a key role in a special performance of the musical Cats.
Gwenno Jones, from Nantgaredig, is a pupil at Stagecoach Carmarthen, the theatre arts group based at the Queen Elizabeth High School, Johnstown, Carmarthen.
The 16-year-old Bro Myrddin pupil will be taking part in a performance of Cats at the 12,000-seat National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on March 24.
The world-famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is being performed as part of the 25th anniversary of Stagecoach Theatre Arts in the UK.
“It is a massive performance – and a massive opportunity,” said Stagecoach Carmarthen principal Liane Davies.
“Gwenno will be one of a number of Stagecoach Carmarthen pupils taking part in the performance, but she has been lucky enough to be singled out for a starring role.
“It’s a big coup for Stagecoach nationally to be allowed to stage Cats – and it is also brilliant news for us at Stagecoach in Carmarthen.
“Competition for places in the production was tough as there are more than 600 Stagecoach schools in the UK alone. Only 35 schools are being allowed take part in the show. I am delighted to say that Stagecoach Carmarthen is one of the schools taking part.
“I will be taking 100 of my students up to Birmingham - all my six to 18-year-olds for the rehearsals and the performance.
“So, as you can imagine, it is a very exciting time for us at Stagecoach in Carmarthen.
“We will have at least two buses travel up from Carmarthen, so we will have something of a mini-convoy going up the motorway.
“It goes without saying that I am very proud of Gwenno and all the pupils who will be taking part in Cats in Birmingham.”
Cats first opened on the West End stage in 1981. It has become one of the world’s best known and best loved musicals.
With a plot based on T.S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and award-winning music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber; Cats, originally directed by Trevor Nunn, has since been presented in more than 20 countries and in about 250 cities, including such diverse destinations as Buenos Aires, Seoul, Helsinki and Singapore.
The show has been translated into 10 languages.
Stagecoach Theatre Arts Carmarthen has its base at the Queen Elizabeth High School, Johnstown, Carmarthen.
