Best of Health awards recognise quality

Schemes which have improved quality through better use of resources are being recognised in Best of Health Staff Awards.
Hywel Dda Health Board’s Best of Health Staff Awards recognise and reward staff who go the extra mile in their day-to-day work, as well as demonstrating innovation in improving practice.
The three finalists in the improving quality through better use of resources category are:
The E-rostering project rollout
The E-rostering project rollout started in 2010 and the project provides an efficient rostering system eliminating the need for wasteful paper based processes. The E-rostering team aims to help managers to increase productivity by controlling resources effectively in relation to patient or service demand. E-rostering also supports flexible working, improved patient experience and helps to save money.
Development of a Spasticity Management Service
Spasticity is an excessive contraction of muscles which can affect people as a result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury or other neurological conditions. Currently adults from Hywel Dda Health Board area who require input from spasticity management clinic are referred to a regional service provided by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. Hywel Dda Health Board physiotherapy service and Dr Gupta, consultant physician, are developing a local service within the Health Board. A six month pilot scheme is currently running in Carmarthenshire and it is hoped this will be expanded to provide care closer to home for all local people who need this service.
Intravitreal Ozurdex Service to treat retinal occlusions in West Wales
Hywel Dda Health Board was the first place in Wales’ to use Ozurdex for patients who developed a complication of macular oedema. This new treatment has been shown to effectively reduce macular oedema of fluid leakage at the centre of the back of the eye and is now recommended by NICE. Introduced in Bronglais Hospital, without any increase to resources, it has now been incorporated as part of the Health Board’s intravitreal service. Through team working at Aberystwyth Eye Centre and a range of staff at Bronglais Hospital, the Health Board has been able to provide improved and high quality care for these patients in West Wales with this sight-threatening condition.
The winner will be announced on January 16.
