Career 'taster day' at Kidwelly construction firm

School pupils from Caraway and Swiss Valley Primary Schools in Carmarthenshire got a taste for a career in construction at a Construction Awareness Day held by local company Dyfrig Dalziel in conjunction with ConstructionSkills.
More than 30 pupils were involved in the day which, which was held at Dyfrig Dalziel’s site in Kidwelly and included visits from Keith Davies AM, Nia Griffith MP and Kidwelly Town Mayor Jeanette Gilasbey. Throughout the day pupils got to try their hand at a range of construction based activities from bricklaying, tiling and carpentry, through to recycling and building a miniature house.
The event highlighted the different career paths available to young people in the industry and reinforced the message that construction is a viable career choice for women as well as men and that young girls should serious consider a future in the industry.
ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council and the Industry Training Board for the construction industry, supported Dyfrig Dalziel with the event, by providing valuable advice and information to the schoolchildren on the day.
Roger Silvester, Construction Careers Advisor for ConstructionSkills said: “This initiative is designed to introduce schoolchildren to the construction industry with a unique opportunity to experience some hands on sessions and building a house themselves – giving them a taste of what it is like to work in the industry.
“As an organisation we are committed to working on behalf of industry to bring new blood into the sector which events like this help us to achieve by exposing young people to the variety of opportunities available to them. It is always a delight to see the expression on the pupils faces when they see the end result of something they have built.”
Mathew Dalziel, Director at Dyfrig Dalziel Limited said: “Following on from our work with local schools we are delighted that we were are able to host this Construction Awareness Day to promote the different opportunities the construction industry offers to both boys and girls. The day was organised so that pupils had the opportunity to experience different trades and also to raise awareness about health and safety on construction sites making it both an educational and fun experience.
“The aim of the day was to raise awareness among these young people about the possible future careers they may be interested in following. We are committed to working with the local community to try and ensure that we are creating local jobs for local people and following the success of this event will continue to look at working closely with other schools in the local area in the future.”
