The latest View from Richmond Park column as published in the Carmarthen Journal today -
The new season is well and truly underway for Carmarthen Town AFC, with the Welsh Premier League side chalking up their first win of the current campaign with victory over Port Talbot last Friday night.
Town face a much sterner test when they take on mighty Bangor at home on Saturday afternoon, but there are signs that Tomi Morgan’s troops are starting to build a team.
It’s been all change this year, with a new manager and new faces galore in the playing line-up.
It is, therefore, time to put the spotlight on some of the current players –
MIKE LEWIS (GK) Date of birth 04.04.89 Ever present with Afan Lido last season. Formally with Swansea City but was released due to injury. Recently graduated in Sports Science from UWIC. A new signing this season.
DERYN BRACE (Defender) 15.03.75 A U18 & U21 International. Deryn spent six years at Wrexham’s Racecourse before signing for Carmarthen Town in 2000-2001. Spent four seasons as Player/Manager at the New Bridge Meadow. Re-signed for Town in November 2006. Having been appointed Manager in May 2007 he resigned May 2010
GARY BANSOR (Defender) 25.10.88
Originally from the East of England, Gary is now a Swansea University student. Played for Maldon Town and Brentwood Town in the Ryman League before joining Port Talbot in January 2009. Has represented Welsh Universities. New signing this season.
RICHARD HUGHES (Defender) 11.12.86 Formerly with Haverfordwest County. Following a long period out through injury he joined Town in the summer of 2007. Now in his fourth season at Richmond he is still recovering from a broken ankle sustained late last season.
DALE GRIFFITHS (Defender) 02.11.85 Now in his second season with Town having signed from Goytre United in January 2010. Had time at Swansea City and Merthyr Tydfil before signing for Llanelli in the summer of 2006. Moved back to the Martyrs for a couple of seasons before joining Goytre. Team Captain.
KEVIN DAVIES (Defender) 09.10.85 New signing this season. A right-sided player Kevin has had Welsh Premier experience with Welshpool Town and Caersws FC. Has played for a number of clubs in the West of England. Signed from Cinderford Town.
LEE BEVAN (Defender) 10.07.87 A product of Neath Athletic’s Youth system and a member of the Eagles’ promotion squad. Sidelined through injury in 2008/9 and returned to the Welsh Premier with Haverfordwest County. Signed from Clevedon Town in June 2010.
KRISTIAN JAMES (Defender) 05.02.82 Was signed by Neville Southall for Dover Athletic in 2001 before joining Cwmbran Town in December 2003 from Welsh Leaguers Neath. Had time at Port Talbot and also registered with Newport County. Moved to Neath from Aberystwyth in January 2010. A new signing.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. Mr Wardell gave an illuminating address, weaving comparisons between his job as a politician and his late father's job as a Tumble barber. It was an amusing, highly-entertaining and thought-provoking address. Mr Wardell, now 69, won the Gower constituency seat in a Parliamentary by-election in 1982. The Labour MP held the seat until his retirement in 1997. He now works as a public affairs consultant in Wales. Mr Wardell's Parliamentary term was largely in opposition to Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Government. But his did make a significant contribution by being the youngest MP to chair the Welsh Affairs Select Committee. Mr Wardell recognised that in the 'fame stakes' he may have played second fiddle to his father, Jack, who was one of the UK's oldest barbers and who cut and styled hair for almost 80 years. Jac

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things. "Together with some friends, I am helping find ways of generating much-needed sponsorship cash for Lauryn. "She has massive potential to succeed on the international stage and I am sure a little bit of financial help will help to smooth her
