Christmas fun in Llanelli

Christmas in Llanelli will be kicked off with a weekend packed full of family entertainment.
The fun starts on Friday, November 20, when the annual Christmas Carnival rolls in to town with a night of entertainment sure to get everyone in the mood for the festive season.
As well as the parade and switch on of the Christmas lights, there will be an impressive firework display, live music, a fun fair and side stalls, all set to ensure an evening of entertainment for all ages.
Carmarthenshire County Council has once again linked up with Llanelli Round Table, Llanelli Town Council, Llanelli Rural Council and Llanelli Chamber of Trade to produce the event, supported by Scarlet FM and sponsored by TAD Builders, of Llanelli.
The carnival will be followed on Saturday with a Family Fun Day.
This new event for 2009 will take place at Llanelli’s Spring Gardens, extending in to the town centre to compliment local retailers and Christmas markets.
With Christmas street entertainers and live performances from local school children, families will also be able to enjoy taking part in arts and crafts workshops, sample Carmarthenshire’s best produce and start their Christmas shopping early with a host of art and food craft stalls.
Carmarthenshire County Council marketing and tourism manager, Huw Parsons, said: “We want to kick start the festive season in Llanelli by putting on a host of entertainment for families to enjoy.
“We are proud to have worked in partnership yet again to put on the annual Christmas Carnival, which is always guaranteed to pull in the crowds.
“And this year we have decided to extend the festivities with our new Family Fun Day which will provide more entertainment and the opportunity for families to get involved with arts and crafts whilst listening to local school children performing on stage.
“We hope everyone will come out and enjoy the fun.”
Llanelli Christmas Carnival remains one of the town’s biggest events, attracting crowds of more than 20,000 for the last 30 years.
Local businesses and groups are encouraged to parade on brightly lit and decorated floats through the town centre, collecting charity cash along the way.
Cllr Clive Scourfield, executive board member for regeneration and leisure, said: “This will be a great weekend for Llanelli families. The annual Christmas Carnival is always well supported with close to 20,000 people flocking to the town centre for the event every year.
“It is a great way of getting the Christmas celebrations underway whilst drawing people to the town centre where they can enjoy the local shops and restaurants.”
