Tesco jobs boost for Burry Port

Tesco could become Burry Port’s biggest employer creating 130 full and part-time jobs if its multi-million-pound store plans are approved.
Selected as Carmarthenshire Council’s preferred operator, Tesco beat off huge interest in the Llanelli Waterside land known historically as “Fairground Field” close to Burry Port Harbour.
Tesco is proposing a new store with a 15,000 sq ft sales area and a 125-space car park that will be available for all shoppers, regardless of whether they visit the store. In addition, the modern store has been designed alongside the award-winning Plasymor so it complements the area and incorporates sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting.
County executive board member for regeneration Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “This is wonderful and long awaited news for Burry Port that will help enrich and develop the community.”
The store will offer customers a wide variety of food, from the Finest to the Value range, as well as recycling facilities, an ATM machine and improved links to all areas of the town.
Provisional planning consents have been approved and Tesco could open its doors to customers around Christmas 2012 if Carmarthenshire Council supports its plans. The money received for the land will be ring fenced for projects within the Joint Venture boundary which stretches along the Millennium Coastal Park.
Local members Cllrs Pat Jones and Stephen James said they had been excited to meet with Tesco regional managers to discuss progress.
Mrs Jones said: “The benefits to the community extend way beyond attracting a modern state of the art store.
“I am excited Tesco are engaging with the community, planning a two-day public consultation about their proposals in the coming weeks to bring the community on board with the wonderful development.
“They will explain the opportunities on offer for local suppliers and their commitment to prioritising the 130 new jobs for local people, which will contribute nearly £1.5 million to the Burry Port economy each year.
"As well as the full time jobs I am excited about part time and seasonal vocational opportunities for our students too ”
Mr James said: “Attracting Tesco is a really bonus. It will do wonders for the vibrancy and economic wellbeing of Burry Port. Our town and its people are really deserving of an enhanced shopping opportunity and the large number of full time and part-time jobs that accompany the development.”
Sophie Akokhia, Tesco’s Corporate Affairs Manager, added: “There is no doubt that Burry Port is a vibrant town but we believe a new foodstore and free car park so close to the high street will encourage more people to shop locally. In addition, we will offer a wide range of community benefits in terms of substantial investment, regeneration and the creation of 130 new jobs that will be recruited through the local Job Centre.”
Commenting on the forthcoming community consultation event, Mrs Akokhia added: “Community representatives and Councillors have provided valuable feedback over the last month, helping to shape the plans that will be on display. We are very proud of what has been produced and the team is looking forward to hearing what Burry Port’s local residents think.”
