Investment in new facilities for mums and babies in 'Hywel Dda'
The Hywel Dda University Health Board has already significantly invested in a new unit maternity unit at Bronglais Hospital and this investment continues in new and refurbished facilities at Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals.
A new unit for premature and sick newborn babies at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen will have four high dependency cots, eight special care cots and one stabilisation cot.
The new facilities will also have specialist teams offering premature and sick newborn babies the best levels of care for them and their families.
New modern midwife led units are also been created at Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals with four additional delivery suites being built at Glangwili Hospital.
Work is also ongoing to create three new high dependency unit beds and build a disabled bathroom and shower room on the children’s ward at Glangwili Hospital.
Head of Maternity Services, Catherine Cotter, said: “We are making significant investment into our buildings to ensure we have the extra beds and cots needed to support the changes to services.
“While doing this we are seeking advice from new mums to ensure the new areas are less clinical and more homely for them and their babies.”
At Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth mums and babies are already benefiting from a new maternity unit which has been developed as part of the front of house scheme which totals more than £38million of investment directly into Ceredigion healthcare.
The new maternity unit is a modern facility with more single and double room accommodation with en-suite facilities.
Other facilities include family room for women who wish to have home from home birth, mood lighting in some rooms and increased water birth facility.
The university health board is also developing plans for a further second phase at Glangwili Hospital which will further enhance the new areas, including additional parent accommodation and a business case is being submitted to Welsh Government.
