Awards for Aberystwyth students
Two Aberystwyth University students have been acknowledged at the annual Student Employee of the Year Awards, held at the recent National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES) conference in Birmingham.
Lynn Abhulimen and Jamie Barker both came away with great accolades, reflecting their outstanding contributions and achievements in combining part-time work with their study commitments
Lynn, a student of the Management & Business School was awarded the Wales Student Employee of the Year 2011 Jobshop Award, while Jamie, a business IT student won the Wales Student Employee of the Year 2011 On Campus Award and the overall Wales Student Employee of the Year 2011 Award.
Dr Russell Davies, Marketing Manager at Aberystwyth University, said: “We are immensely proud of Jamie and Lynn and they should be very pleased with their achievements. As a University, we actively encourage practical experience within the workplace and we work hard to maintain and develop our links with businesses and employers. These awards are an invaluable way of demonstrating the importance of these links.”
The nominations were judged within the NASES institution, before being passed on to be judged by a regional panel. It was the strength of the nomination content which led to these awards being allocated.
Both students were nominated by their employers; Lynn by Beverley Herring, Job Link Manager at the Careers Advisory Service and Nerys Davies also from the Careers Advisory Service; and Jamie by Rosie Mills and Dr Ian Harris at Aberystwyth University Recruitment and Admissions.
Their employers were asked to note the students’:
• Responsibilities at their work placements
• Their contributions to each of their departments
• How they excelled in specific areas e.g. communication, commitment, work/study balance, team work, creativity, innovation), along with examples of these.
Jamie Barker, commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the University’s Recruitment and Admissions department and feel I have gained a number of valuable skills which will put me in good stead when I graduate and move into full time work. To be nominated, then awarded with an accolade such as this is just the icing on the cake.”
The Student Employee of the Year Awards aims to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who combine part-time work with their study commitments.
It has been coordinated on an annual basis by the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES) since 2002 and has grown year on year.
Students can add something to a business and the growth in SEOTY shows that employers understand this. In a difficult graduate recruitment market, a SEOTY award can boost a students CV and give them the all important edge they need to succeed.
