The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star
The latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star -
The recruitment day held by Côr Meibion Llanelli at the St Elli Centre, Llanelli, on Saturday proved to be a big hit.
The choir staged three ‘mini concerts’ and collected money on behalf of the Nepal Earthquake Appeal Fund.
“It was a very successful day,” said choir vice-chairman Tony Crossman.
“Members of Llanelli’s Nepalese community were in attendance in their traditional dress and wearing their Gurkha hats and medals. We were delighted to be able to raise more than £540 for the Nepal appeal.
“It was also a chance for us to give people a sneak preview of some of the songs we will be performing at a special concert with The Three Welsh Tenors at the Selwyn Samuel Centre on Sunday, July 12.”
On July 12, Côr Meibion Llanelli will also be joined by some extra special guests – Llangennech Junior School Choir, Ysgol Iau Llangennech.
The school choir performed admirably in the BBC Songs of Praises to deliver a "faultless" performance to come top in the junior school choir category.
Llangennech Junior School Choir has always competed in competitions such as the Urdd Eisteddfod, and in 2011 they began to enjoy some success. For the very first time in the school’s history a group of singers from the choir reached the final at the Urdd Eisteddfod, claiming third prize in the unaccompanied vocal ensemble competition, and a day later their small two-part harmony choir claimed second prize in the same Eisteddfod!
Since then, the choir has gone from strength to strength, reaching the final of the UK wide competition ‘School’s Got Talent’, where they performed in The Royal Gardens Hotel, Kensington, London, in front of celebrities such as Gino D’Acampo.
This preceded a very busy, but unforgettable period in the history of the choir, winning the ‘Large Primary School Choirs’ competition at the National Urdd Eisteddfod three times consecutively in 2013, 2014 and again this year! They claimed second place in the final of the annual ‘Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year’ competition on BBC1 in March 2014, and competed again this year- to everyone’s joy they managed to win the competition.
They have appeared on a number of Welsh language television programs, and support local Eisteddfodau whenever possible, winning first prize at the Hendy Eisteddfod in 2014 against very stiff competition.
The choir launched their new CD, “Dyna Ryfeddod yn Wir!” at last year’s National Eisteddfod in Llanelli on numerous stalls and stages around the Maes.
Lewis Richards is the Musical Director of the choir, and their accompanist is Miss Awena Owen on piano.
Tickets for the concert are £15 and available from the Selwyn Samuel centre 07798 870598, the Halfway Hotel 01554 773571 and any Côr Meibion Llanelli chorister.
Côr Meibion Dyffryn Tywi will be celebrating their 40th anniversary with a concert on Saturday, July 18, at the Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly (7pm).
The choristers of Cor Meibion Dyffryn Tywi have an excellent line-up for the evening.
The choir’s guests include celebrated Welsh tenor Rhys Meirion, mezzo-soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies and a folk group from Karelia.
The evening will be hosted by the popular BBC Cymru and Radio Cymru presenter Garry Owen. The evening is sponsored by Kidwelly's Gravells garage.
Tickets are £10 and available by ringing -01269 860996 or 01554 890956.

Lleisiau Hardd choir from Llanelli will be celebrating 10 years as a choir with their special concert at Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli, on Saturday, July 18.
Over the course of 10 years, the choir has grown in stature, reputation, and gained recognition on many fronts.
Over the past years, concerts have attracted sell out audiences, with some star guest appearances. The choir is under the musical direction of Bridget Radford.
Fresh from their Last Night of the Proms, the Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers are planning some exciting and rather unique events for later this year.
In September, they will be the star at the final performance of the Milford Haven Music Festival with old friend of the choir Gary Griffiths.
In December, as part of their ever popular big Christmas concert on Saturday 19th December, a “Reunion Choir” of past choristers will get together with the current Hywel Choir for a unique performance with the symphonic sounds of the British Sinfonietta Orchestra. A very warm welcome is extended to all past members from all eras of the choir to take part. Great excitement is growing regarding the performance with choristers planning to return to Llanelli from as far as USA for this unique and magical occasion.
