New community project for the Gwendraeth

Menter Cwm Gwendraeth is appealing to individuals and local organisations who want help to develop local projects to get in touch with their newly-appointed Community Liaison Officer David Saywell.
David will be working for the Cryfhau Cymunedau (Strengthening Communities) scheme which forms part of Carmarthenshire’s Innovative Communities Project.
This is an integral part of the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013.
David said “You may be looking for volunteers or wanting to volunteer in places in rural Carmarthenshire to help strengthen and develop your local communities. I am keen to work with community and voluntary groups, charities, and Town and Community Councils and will aim to support and develop Community Mentors. These mentors will work in their own areas and look at ways to bring local communities together socially, culturally and economically. I will be there to support them in any way I can.
“Community involvement is crucial and I want to work with disenfranchised, disengaged or economically inactive people and involve them in social activities that will be of benefit both to themselves and the wider community. This could result in the development of a wide range of activities, such as community events, workshops of local interest and opportunities for volunteering to serve the local community.
“I would like to hear from anyone who has an idea for improving their local community to contact me on 01269 871600 or 07891 487247.
“The scheme will focus on specific groups of people such as residents on a housing estate, a street, an isolated valley, or an upland area in rural Carmarthenshire. I want to work with a wide range of people in our rural communities including community and voluntary groups, charities, Town and Community Councils, village halls, chapels and churches, and others. I’m also interested in speaking to people who would like to form a new group or work with an existing group and I can help them to do so.
“Since the vast majority of Carmarthenshire’s rural communities are traditionally Welsh speaking, the project will ensure that Welsh speakers are engaged through the medium of Welsh.
“The project can support youth groups, Young Farmers Clubs, the Scouts, the Urdd, Carmarthenshire Young People’s Partnership and the Carmarthenshire Youth Forum.
“Individuals and groups will be given the opportunity to develop new skills or practice skills previously learnt whilst developing local projects.”
