Celebration for Carmarthenshire apprentices

A celebration event has been held to recognise the achievements of construction apprentices in Carmarthenshire who gained their NVQ Level Three qualifications.
The event was held by Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd (CCTAL) at Llanelli’s Parc Y Scarlets during September.
A total of 13 apprentice carpenters and nine apprentice bricklayers gained their Level Three NVQ awards in their respective trades, as well as completing a two-day Construction Site Supervisor’s Safety Course.
The scheme has been a success to-date with over a 90 per cent achievement rate, which is above the UK average.
The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme is a five-year pilot which commenced in 2007. More than 40 local contractors have engaged in the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme which provides work placements for apprentices to gain practical experience and site evidence towards their qualifications.
Robert Williams, chairman of CCTAL, said: “It is extremely encouraging to note the achievements of our first intake of apprentices in this very innovative shared approach to delivering craft apprenticeships in Carmarthenshire.
“I would like to thank our partners, participating companies and the individuals that have made such a contribution in ensuring its success thus far.
“Congratulations to the apprentices for reaching the highest levels possible within their chosen trade. I wish them all the very best of success and an enjoyable and prosperous career in construction.”
Joyce Watson, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, attended the celebration event.
She said: “The benefits of this scheme are clear – allowing employers to pool their resources and share the training, and allowing apprentices to gain new skills and experience of working in a range of industrial placements.
“I’m truly delighted to see the Shared Apprentice Scheme go from strength to strength.”
CCTAL has been running for more than 22 years, and brings together several organisations including Carmarthenshire County Council’s building services division, ConstructionSkills and Coleg Sir Gar’s construction department, with the aim of aiding the training requirements of local construction employers.
Phil Lumley, head of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Property Services division, said: “We are proud to be a part of this scheme, which is investing in the future of so many apprentices. Our participation in schemes such as this further extend the positive partnerships we have within education, training and construction.”
