Carmarthen Leisure Centre

I was delighted to read many moons ago about the opening of the new Carmarthen Leisure Centre in Johnstown.
Having joined the Carmarthenshire Council gym at Llanelli Leisure Centre, I was pleased to find my membership extended to use of other local authority gyms such as Carmarthen.
“It’s all high tech and the machines will recognise your USB memory stick when you plug into the kit at the different centres” . . . at least that is what the sale pitch said.
Imagine my disappointment then to find the reality is a little different and to discover that the Carmarthen Leisure Centre is a work in progress.
The gremlins, of course, are not the fault of the staff. The crew at Carmarthen and Llanelli leisure centres are always pleasant and very helpful.
But even they had to shrug their shoulders and admit defeat when I attempted to plug into the kit in Carmarthen.
By all accounts, the technology at Carmarthen and Llanelli doesn’t communicate. Result? Lots of tut-tutting and more forms to be filled in to log-in at Carmarthen. And then, when I returned to Llanelli, the system didn’t recognise me because I’d been previously logged in at Carmarthen. Oh dear!
The technology problems are just gremlins, I guess, when put into the wider context of the work continuing at Carmarthen Leisure centre.
When I visited the gym last week (situated a floor above the changing rooms in a quirk of modern-day design) I thought I’d completed a reasonable workout.
But there was a surprise in store when I came to leave the gym. Barriers and busy builders barred the way back to the changing rooms. Result? I had to leave via a fire exit and trek around the outside of the building in the wind and the pouring rain to the main entrance and access the changing rooms that way.
Perhaps it is part of a new gym regime to make sure we get a bit more fresh air?
Personally, though, I think I’d rather take a job with Carillion as a hod-carrier than have to carry out my weekly workout on what is effectively a building site.
I am sure the Carmarthen Leisure Centre will be very nice when it is finished. Perhaps they should have actually finished building it before opening it? I am sure there are good reasons for it being open for business even with orienteering courses for gym users ! I am also sure it will be finished . . . perhaps one day?
